How do you differentiate cognitive decline in clinical depression and dementia?

Depression along with cognitive decline and the impairment of memory could be the hallmark of dementia. Although it is difficult to differentiate whether cognitive decline is due to depression or dementia, the decline in depression is rapid compared to dementia which progresses over the years. Depression is treatable with medication and improves the cognitive component of dementia as well.
